The national school feeding program in Tonkolili District has begun for the 2023/2024 first-term school calendar

As part of the school feeding program, a policy initiated by the Government of Sierra Leone, each child is provided with a daily meal consisting of either rice or locally produced gari, along with beans, oil, and salt. Gari is preferred in certain districts due to its local production

The National School Feeding Policy has emerged in response to a shift in government activities, emphasizing nutrition and food security, as well as a transition by partner organizations from food aid to food assistance. This policy sets forth guidelines for the transition and establishes institutional arrangements and structures for a locally-sourced school feeding program.

Through this policy, Sierra Leone has taken a significant stride in aligning with the global trend of countries assuming responsibility and ownership of their school feeding programs.
