The Sierra Leone Police’s Family Support Unit attached to the Taiama Police Station launched a crucial school-to-school sensitization campaign targeting early marriage and teenage pregnancy on September 24 this year.
The initiative commenced at the Ahmadiyya Muslim Junior Secondary School in Taiama town, Kori Chiefdom aimed to reach students across four operational chiefdoms: Kori, Kowa, Kamajie, and Dassie.
Led by the Head of the FSU, Detective Sergeant Abdul Wahid Kawa, the campaign sought to educate young people about the severe consequences of early marriage and teenage pregnancy. “This campaign is just the beginning,” Kawa stated. “We are committed to extending our outreach to ensure that more young people are educated and aware of the risks associated with these issues.”
The team, which includes two police officers and civil society activist Ibrahim Gbenda, engages directly with students, providing them with vital information and resources. The interactive sessions encourage students to ask questions, allowing for a deeper understanding of the topic. The campaign aims to empower pupils with knowledge to make informed decisions about their futures.
As the program unfolds, it is expected to extend its reach, promoting awareness and prevention strategies among youth in the region. This proactive approach by law enforcement and civil society marks a significant step in addressing pressing social issues affecting the younger generation in Moyamba District.
