A father whose 12-year-old daughter was allegedly raped by an unknown man has called on the government and development partners to strengthen efforts to ensure that perpetrators of rape and Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) are brought to justice.
According to Politico Newspaper, the father, who requested to remain anonymous, shared the heartbreaking story of his daughter’s ordeal.
The father, who wishes to remain anonymous, recounted the traumatic experience of his daughter, who was raped by a man she met on the road while searching for her father.
“The girl said when they reached an isolated area, he then lured her into the bush where he sexually abused her and fled away,” he said.
The girl has been receiving psychosocial and medical support at the Rainbo Center in Bo. The father expressed hope that the perpetrator will be caught, saying his daughter can identify him if seen.
Another survivor, a university student, also shared her ordeal of being raped by an armed robber, saying the support from Rainbo Center helped restore her confidence.
Fatu Favor Fomba Pyne, Bo district Coordinator at the Rainbo Center, said the center provides survivor-centered support, including cash assistance, to help survivors access justice and medical care.
The Rainbo Survivor Incident Report 2024 shows Freetown accounts for 33.2% of sexual assault cases, followed by Kenema and Bo.
The EU and Irish Aid have provided funding support to Rainbo Center to tackle SGBV and support survivors.
