A student, James Freeman, is facing charges of fraudulent conversion after his own brother testified against him in court.

Freeman appeared before Magistrate Santigie Bangura at Pademba Road Court No. 2, accused of failing to return valuable items entrusted to him by Honorable Musa Tarawally, a prominent political figure.

The prosecution alleges that between January and December 2023, at No. 5 Lizzy Drive, Juba Pipeline, Freeman failed to return four HP laptops, a Dell computer, two plasma televisions, and other items valued at 78,100 leones.

In a dramatic turn, the prosecution’s key witness was Freeman’s brother, DPC 11018 Aron N. Dumbuya, a police officer. Dumbuya testified that his brother received the items for safekeeping but failed to return them.

He confirmed that only one laptop was recovered, and a damaged television, not recognized by the complainant, was found at their residence. Dumbuya also stated that he informed Honorable Tarawally about Freeman’s inability to return the items, and that despite multiple attempts, Freeman did not comply, leading to police intervention.

Prosecutor Assistant Superintendent of Police Dialla Wellington argued against bail, citing the seriousness of the offense. Defense lawyer V.S. Nabie Esq. requested bail for Freeman, but Magistrate Bangura denied the request.
