The Freetown City Council Mayor, Yvonne Aki-Sawyer has announced a phased rehabilitation of our cemeteries, expressing total commitment to overcome most of the challenges her council was faced with in the first term of office.

“Cemeteries are our final resting place, so it’s important that they are properly cared for and honored,” Mayor Aki-Sawyer declared. “We are determined to overcome the challenges experienced in my first term and to ensure that Freetown’s cemeteries are now constantly maintained and effectively managed.”

Spearheading the initiative is Deputy Mayor Kweku Lisk Esq., working closely with the Chief Administrator, relevant FCC Council Committees and Departments, and the cemetery clerks. To assess the progress so far, Deputy Mayor Lisk, along with Councillors Zainab Conteh and Samuel Kamara, visited four cemeteries on New Year’s Day: Congo Town, Circular Road, Kissy Road, and Race Course.

While acknowledging that the project is still in its early stages, Mayor Aki-Sawyer expressed optimism about the coming months. “We have only just started,” she stated, “and we look forward to delivering significant improvements to our cemeteries in the months to come!”

The Mayor also extended her gratitude to Christian Dauda for his support in rehabilitating the Ascension Town Cemetery during her absence. This collaborative effort highlights the commitment to improving Freetown’s cemeteries from both within the city council and the wider community.

The announcement of the cemetery rehabilitation project is a welcome development for Freetown residents. Well-maintained cemeteries not only serve as dignified resting places for the deceased but also contribute to the overall cleanliness and beautification of the city.
