The Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), has distributed livestock to farmers in 12 communities within the Sorogbema Chiefdom, Pujehun District, as part of efforts to boost livestock farming and enhance food security.

The distribution event, held on Tuesday, January 21, 2024, is a key component of the government’s Feed Salone initiative. Each selected household received six English cocks and hens, along with poultry feed, to support sustainable livestock farming. Distribution quantities were tailored to the sizes of the recipient communities to ensure equitable support.

Lucy Coker, the District Agriculture Officer, commended the farmers for their participation and stressed the importance of livestock farming as a complement to traditional agricultural practices. “This initiative is not just about food security but also about empowering communities to achieve nutritional self-reliance,” she noted.

Peter Massaquoi, a representative of the National Federation of Farmers, applauded the project as a significant step in advancing President Bio’s Feed Salone program. “This initiative has both nutritional and economic benefits for our communities, and we trust the beneficiaries will use the resources responsibly to maximize their potential,” he remarked.

Hawa Bao, a beneficiary from Jeneh village, expressed profound gratitude on behalf of her community. She pledged to ensure the livestock would multiply and benefit others in the village. “This will make a big difference in our lives, and we are committed to sharing the benefits as the livestock grow,” she said.

The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to improving rural livelihoods and advancing agricultural development in Sierra Leone.
