The Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Land, Housing, and Country Planning, has officially launched an exercise to reclaim land within the designated boundary of the Tacugama Sanctuary.

The sanctuary, recognized as a national tourist asset, is set to undergo a reclamation process aimed at preserving its status and ensuring its optimal use for national and international tourism.

The reclamation initiative began on February 26, 2025, and is expected to continue until all land within the Tacugama Sanctuary’s designated boundary is fully reclaimed. This effort forms part of the government’s broader strategy to protect and enhance Sierra Leone’s natural resources.

The Ministry has called on individuals with legitimate claims to land within the sanctuary to report to the Acting Professional Head and Director of Surveys and Lands for verification. This verification process will take place over a 21-day period, from February 27, 2025, to March 19, 2025.

Landowners and claimants who present the necessary documented proof will be issued acknowledgment receipts. The Ministry encourages all concerned parties to cooperate fully with the verification process to ensure a smooth and transparent reclamation exercise.

The Government of Sierra Leone has emphasized the importance of this initiative and appreciates the cooperation of all stakeholders involved.
