In a grand celebration of history and excellence, the Sierra Leone Grammar School (SLGS) has unveiled a special 180th-anniversary uniform (Ashobi) as part of its commemorative activities.
The unveiling ceremony was led by Honourable Davies Cole, who dedicated the moment to the memory of the school’s 14 foundation pupils and his late uncles, Dr. John Oliver Davies Cole and Winston Davies Cole.
Honourable Davies Cole, while unveiling the memorabilia, highlighted the significance of the occasion, inviting all those connected to the school to embrace the uniform (ashobi) as a symbol of heritage and unity.
“As we celebrate 180 years of excellence, service, and giving back, we invite all Regentonians—past and present—along with their families and loved ones, to proudly wear this uniform. This is not just an outfit; it is a piece of our rich history,” he stated.
The uniform, referred to as “ashobi,” serves as a tribute to the school’s legacy and the impact it has had on generations of Sierra Leoneans and West Africans.
Founded on March 25, 1845, by the Church Missionary Society (CMS), Sierra Leone Grammar School was the first secondary school in Sub-Saharan Africa, pioneering formal European-style education in the region. Initially called the CMS Grammar School, it started with 14 pupils, many of whom were drawn from Fourah Bay College. The school was housed at Regent Square, where its strong academic and disciplinary foundation was laid.
Through the years, SLGS has earned a reputation for producing distinguished leaders, administrators, and professionals across various fields, playing a crucial role in Sierra Leone’s recognition as the “Athens of West Africa.”
In 1962, the school relocated to its current 50-acre campus in Murray Town, offering expanded facilities and maintaining its commitment to academic excellence and character building. The institution continues to lead in educational innovations while upholding its traditional values, shaping students who excel both nationally and internationally.
Celebrating 180 Years of Impact
The 180th-anniversary celebrations mark a significant milestone in the school’s journey, honoring its pioneering role in West African education.
The uniform (ashobi) serves as a unifying emblem, bringing together past and present students, teachers, and supporters in a shared appreciation of the school’s enduring legacy.
As the school continues to thrive, the anniversary celebration stands as a testament to the vision of its founders and the determination of generations of Regentonians who have carried its torch forward.
