High Court Judge, Honourable Justice Amy Wright, has announced her retirement effective January 15, 2026, marking a notable transition within Sierra Leone’s judiciary at a time of ongoing reforms and judicial appointments.
In a formal letter addressed to President Julius Maada Bio, Justice Wright stated that having attained the constitutional retirement age of 60 in July 2024, she is exercising her right to early retirement under Section 137(2)(a) of the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone.
Reflecting on her tenure since her appointment to the High Court bench in April 2016, Justice Wright expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve. “Allow me to use this opportunity to express my sincere thanks and appreciation for the opportunity and privilege accorded me to serve my country, and I hope I have made a difference in my own way,” she wrote.
Her retirement has been formally communicated to the Chief Justice, the Judicial and Legal Service Commission, and the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice.
Although High Court judges in Sierra Leone are constitutionally required to retire at the age of 65, the law permits voluntary retirement upon attaining 60 years. Justice Wright’s decision to step down at this stage comes during a significant period of restructuring within the nation’s judicial system.
