In a concerted effort to address the issue of drug abuse among the youths in Pujehun District, the Human Rights Committee on Drug Abuse recently organized a pivotal sensitization meeting in Pujehun town.

Held at the Civil Society Secretariat on 37 Military Barrack Road, the event aimed to engage various youth groups, including Ataya Bases, Ghettos, Okada Riders, and other Community-Based Organizations within the township.

Formed in June the previous year, the Committee’s primary mission revolves around safeguarding citizens’ rights, especially during festive seasons.

Comprising diverse civil society organizations within Pujehun District, the Committee operates at both the local and national levels, advocating for the protection and defense of human rights.

Fawundu articulated the Committee’s vision for a drug-free society, urging participants to disseminate the critical message to their peers. The focus remains on steering away from harmful substances like Kush and Tramadol, fostering a healthier and drug-free lifestyle.

Agnes K. Brima, a participant benefiting from the sensitization meeting, lauded the initiative, stressing the prevalence of drug addiction among Sierra Leone’s youth. She underscored the urgent need for young people to abstain from drug abuse, emphasizing its adverse impact on mental well-being.

The session concluded with a strong call-to-action, urging attendees to actively combat drug abuse and uphold their responsibilities as citizens in creating a safer, drug-free environment for the youth in Pujehun District.
