Residents of Kambia District have called for an immediate and independent investigation into allegations that untrained medical personnel are carrying out high-risk procedures at the Kambia Government Hospital, following reports of multiple deaths and serious medical complications.
Community members say the hospital is operating without a trained medical doctor on active duty, leaving Community Health Officers (CHOs), many of whom they claim lack surgical training, to perform complex procedures, including cesarean section operations. Community leaders and health advocates warn that the situation has placed patients at serious risk, particularly pregnant women requiring emergency care.
The call for an investigation follows reports of several complications and deaths allegedly linked to unprofessional medical interventions at the facility. One of the most recent cases cited by residents is the death of Kadiatu Pompay Kamara, a young mother who reportedly underwent two cesarean section procedures shortly after giving birth and later died. Her death has intensified public anger and raised concerns about standards of care at the hospital.
“This is a government referral hospital that should be a centre of medical excellence, yet it is functioning without a resident doctor attending to patients,” a community representative said. “That reality is not only unacceptable; it is dangerous.”
Residents further allege that apart from a medical superintendent, who they claim is rarely present for direct patient care, the hospital lacks qualified medical oversight. They are demanding explanations from hospital management and the Ministry of Health on why CHOs are allowed to conduct high-risk surgical procedures without supervision from certified medical doctors.
Civil society organisations and local stakeholders have also joined the calls for urgent government intervention. They are urging authorities to deploy qualified doctors to the hospital, strengthen oversight mechanisms, and review hospital management practices. According to them, systemic failures at the facility have contributed to avoidable loss of life and have weakened public trust in the healthcare system.
In a statement issued by concerned residents, they said they are seeking “accountability, justice, and urgent reform,” stressing that no family should suffer preventable loss due to negligence.
As public pressure continues to grow, residents are appealing to health authorities to act quickly to prevent further deaths and restore confidence in the Kambia Government Hospital.
Efforts to obtain an official response from hospital authorities and the Ministry of Health were ongoing at the time of filing this report.
