In a recent surprise inspection of the Kambia Power House, Hon. Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella, the Chairman of Renewable Energy and Food Security, uncovered significant issues that require immediate attention to enhance the facility’s operations.

During the visit, which took place without prior notice, Dr. Yumkella observed that progress on ongoing projects was lagging and that the surrounding environment had become unkempt, raising concerns about maintenance standards.

Dr. Yumkella’s inspection is crucial, given the pivotal role that electricity plays in the development of Kambia District. As the only district in Sierra Leone hosting an international market—Barmoi Luma—Kambia is vital for cross-border trade and economic activities.

The local Kambia Central Market significantly supports livelihoods, benefiting traders and businesses not just in Sierra Leone but also in neighboring Guinea. A reliable electricity supply would not only enhance these operations but also create job opportunities and stimulate economic growth in the region.

Understanding the challenges his community faces, Dr. Yumkella, a Kambia native, emphasized the necessity of a stable power supply.

He noted that improved electricity services would lead to a better quality of life for residents and could attract increased investment to the district.

“Electricity is fundamental for the development of businesses, schools, healthcare facilities, and households,” he stated. “Without it, our progress remains stifled.”

The Chairman of Kambia District Council, Mohamed Abdul Masarico Mansaray, echoed Dr. Yumkella’s concerns, expressing frustration over the slow pace of work and lack of proper maintenance at the Power House.

He called for stronger management practices and improved oversight to ensure that projects are completed on time and that the facility is well-maintained to provide reliable services to the community.

Dr. Yumkella’s visit serves as a critical reminder of the need for accountability and efficiency in public infrastructure projects. Both leaders are advocating for swift action to rectify the deficiencies identified during the inspection.

With Kambia’s immense economic potential, reliable electricity is essential, and immediate steps must be taken to resolve the current challenges to ensure a sustainable power supply for the future.
