The Kono Mineral Mining Review Project (KMMRP) and the Kono Union in the Diaspora have significantly enhanced healthcare in Kono District through their joint donation of five brand-new tyres to the National Emergency Medical Services (NEMS).

This critical support addresses the pressing issue of worn-out tyres affecting the district’s ambulances, which are essential for emergency medical responses.

The intervention was prompted by a pressing appeal from the District Operations Supervisor for NEMS, who detailed the critical state of one of the district’s ambulances. With NEMS playing a crucial role in delivering emergency care—especially to pregnant women, young children, and other critical cases—the need for functional and reliable transport is essential.

The Chairman of the Council of Paramount Chiefs in Kono, PC Sahr Edward Mbawa, spearheaded the effort by coordinating with KMMRP and the Kono Diaspora Union. His decisive action resulted in the swift provision of tyres, significantly enhancing the district’s emergency medical response capabilities.

PC Mbawa highlighted the importance of this support, stating, “The health and well-being of our community is of utmost importance. This generous donation from KMMRP and the Kono Union exemplifies how collaborative efforts can overcome the challenges our district faces. I urge other Kono indigenes to follow this exemplary model.”

Saa Mockaimakoe Famanda, Country Director of KMMRP, highlighted the importance of this initiative, noting that the support was made possible through the leadership of Sia Sumana, Vice President of the Kono Union and founding Chairperson of KMMRP. Famanda underscored that this donation is part of a broader effort to address the historical neglect faced by Kono District, despite its mineral wealth.

It is troubling that a district rich in diamonds and home to multinational mining companies struggles with basic healthcare needs,” Famanda commented. “We remain committed to ensuring that mining policies benefit the local community and will continue to support essential services like healthcare.”

Dr. Mohamed Gbessay Sheku, the District Medical Officer, commended the timely intervention, emphasizing that sustained support is vital for effective medical service delivery. Likewise, Joyce Senessie, NEMS District Operations Supervisor, acknowledged the positive impact of the donation, noting that it has already improved their ability to respond to emergencies and is expected to contribute to reducing maternal mortality rates.

Ibrahim A.S. Bockarie, District Coordinator for KMMRP in Kono, reaffirmed their dedication to advocating for responsible mining practices and ensuring that the district benefits from its extensive mineral resources.
