Members of the Freetown-Makeni Grand Commandery of the Knights of St. John International, alongside the Grand Ladies Auxiliary, held a joint Lenten retreat on Saturday, March 7, at St. Paul’s Quasi Parish. The event aimed to strengthen spiritual reflection and reinforce members’ commitment to charitable service.

The retreat brought together brothers, sisters, cadets, and juniors from across the Freetown–Lungi jurisdiction, forming part of the Order’s traditional Lenten observances that provide time for prayer, fasting, and spiritual renewal.

Delivering the main reflection, Rev. Fr. Andrew Hassan Kamara focused on the Seven Last Words of Jesus Christ on the Cross. He highlighted themes of forgiveness, salvation, suffering, and reconciliation, urging members to demonstrate compassion, humility, and Christ-like behavior in their daily lives. Fr. Kamara also warned of moral challenges facing modern society and encouraged participants to uphold Christian values both within the Church and the wider community.

The retreat included a session for personal confession and quiet reflection, followed by Holy Mass celebrated by Rev. Fr. Dr. John Nat Tucker. In his homily, he reflected on the parable of the prodigal son, emphasizing that repentance and sincere return to God lead to mercy and forgiveness.

As part of the retreat’s charitable outreach, the Knights and Ladies Auxiliary presented food items valued at Le 25,000 and a cash donation of Le 15,000 to St. Paul’s Major Seminary to support the training of future priests.

Grand President Brig. Gen. Anthony Salia expressed appreciation to the clergy for their guidance and encouraged members to maintain the high moral standards associated with the Order. Representing the Supreme Subordinate Board of the Order in Sierra Leone, First Vice President Brig. Gen. Ing. Peter K. Sone-Nzumbe commended strong participation from various commanderies and auxiliaries, describing it as a sign of unity and dedication to faith. Noble Sister Adeline Kargbo, Second Vice President of the Supreme Subordinate Ladies Auxiliary, also thanked the clergy for facilitating a spiritually enriching gathering.

The retreat concluded with a vote of thanks from Grand Secretary Col. John Bosco Massaquoi, who reaffirmed the leadership’s commitment to guiding and supporting members across the jurisdiction.
