Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, former President of Sierra Leone and leader of the opposition All People’s Congress (APC), is scheduled to return home after spending more than a year in Abuja, Nigeria.

The announcement was made by the APC’s National Deputy Chairman, Ambassador Osman Foday Yansaneh, during a keynote address at the recent APC Youth Congress held in Bo City.

Ambassador Yansaneh confirmed that Dr. Koroma’s health has significantly improved following medical treatment in Nigeria. He is expected to arrive in Sierra Leone by October 2025.

This marks the second time Dr. Koroma has publicly indicated plans for his return, with the first announcement occurring during an APC delegation’s visit to his residence in Abuja.

Recent activities suggest Dr. Koroma is becoming more publicly engaged, as he was seen attending a book launch for former Nigerian President Ibrahim Babangida. Ambassador Yansaneh noted that several current and former African heads of state are anticipated to accompany Dr. Koroma upon his return. Discussions led by Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu are reportedly underway to coordinate this visit.

The timing of Dr. Koroma’s return has raised speculation, particularly as it comes just ahead of the APC’s 2026 National Delegates Convention and the 2028 general elections. Some APC members believe his return may be linked to his desire to contribute to national development after completing his medical treatment.

In December 2024, Dr. Koroma met with his legal adviser, Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara (JFK), to explore legal avenues regarding his return. Additionally, an APC national executive delegation visited him in February 2025, during which he hinted again at his imminent return.

Ambassador Yansaneh revealed that the current APC National Chairman, Hon. Minkail Mansaray, is currently hospitalized in India following a long illness and is not expected to return in time for the upcoming lower-level APC elections.
