Dr. Turad Senesie, the Minister of Lands, Housing, and Country Planning, handed over 15 acres of land to a group of disabled individuals who have long struggled to secure a home last week.
During the ceremony, one beneficiary expressed his relief after enduring over nine years of hardship. “This is our happiest day,” he said, describing the moment as a turning point in their lives.
The Lands Minister urged the group to make good use of the land and emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting persons with disabilities.
He also called on donor agencies, humanitarian organizations, and kind-hearted individuals to help construct shelters on the property.
Representatives from the ministry, disability rights advocates, and community leaders attended the event, praising the government’s efforts as a major step toward improving the lives of vulnerable citizens in Sierra Leone.
As the beneficiaries celebrate this new beginning, the next step will be to mobilise resources for building permanent shelters that provide safe and dignified living conditions.
Some disabled persons, especially in the capital Freetown, live in deplorale condition with many forced to beg in the streets to earn their living.
The government, right groups and humanitarian organisations have been providing support to some disabled groups but many believe that their situation could be eased through skills development, education for their children and proper shelter.
