The United Mines Workers Union, Koidu Limited Branch, has officially announced a sit-at-home strike action against Koidu Limited Mining Company, set to begin on Sunday, November 24, 2024, at 11:00 PM GMT.

Speaking to the Sierraloaded correspondent in Kono, the Secretary General of the Union, Sulaiman Mansaray, outlined the union’s position, emphasizing the necessity of the action.

He explained that the union had exhausted all legal avenues to resolve outstanding demands and that this strike is a last resort to ensure the concerns of the workforce are addressed.

In a press release issued on November 22, 2024, the union urged all national employees of Koidu Limited to remain at home during the strike and refrain from reporting to work until their demands are resolved.

The Secretary General further stated that the union leadership has fulfilled all legal requirements to validate the strike, countering any claims by Koidu Limited management disputing the legitimacy of the action.

“The leadership of the union has followed all legal requirements to ensure the legality of the strike action. We call on all national employees to follow the directives of the union executive and ignore any correspondence from Koidu Limited management debunking this strike action,” Mansaray said.

The union’s leadership, represented by Branch Union President Charles Kanessie and Secretary General Mansaray, also emphasized the need for nonviolence and public safety during the strike.

Employees were advised to steer clear of any violent actions or disruptions and to maintain discipline while waiting for the resolution of their grievances.

As the sit-at-home strike approaches, the general public and the workforce await further developments. The management of Koidu Limited has yet to issue a public response to the announcement.
