The Deputy Minister of Planning and Economic Development (MoPED), Rev. Dr. Jonathan Titus-Williams, addressed staff and residents of Home Leone’s ‘Destiny Village’ amidst a protracted impasse at Mabrown village, Newton, in the Western Area Rural District Council (WARDC) on Tuesday 13th February, 2024.

The visit aimed to mediate the growing discord between residents and the management team of Home Leone, a Luton-based charity in Sierra Leone dedicated to alleviating slum conditions for the world’s poorest. Notably, the village is part of a larger initiative to provide low-cost housing, job opportunities, education, and healthcare to vulnerable populations in Sierra Leone.

The impasse, rooted in disputes over ownership and benefits, has prompted residents to seek intervention from the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development (MoPED).

Peter N. Sam-Kpakra, MoPED’s Development Secretary, commended both parties for their restraint amidst challenging circumstances and emphasized the ministry’s commitment to overseeing NGO operations while acknowledging economic hardships exacerbating tensions.

Residents voiced frustration over perceived deception by Home Leone management, urging government intervention to address their grievances.

Meanwhile, Sahr Ndomaina, Home Leone’s General manager expressed gratitude for MoPED’s mediation efforts and urged expedited resolution.

Rev. Dr. Titus-Williams underscored the importance of peace and security, urging restraint and warning against unwarranted unrest. He pledged thorough review of concerns, emphasizing the need for legally binding agreements regarding rents, tenancy, and arrears.

He called on religious leaders and community leaders to advocate for peace and announced plans for urgent negotiations facilitated by MoPED.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to dialogue, underscoring the importance of collaboration in achieving sustainable solutions for Home Leone and its residents.
