The Minister of Health, along with WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, and other local and international partners, has launched the ‘Health Train’ campaign 2025 in Moyamba District to assess the quality of health services provided and explore ways to set new standards for delivering improved healthcare using the innovative life-stages approach.
The innovative idea focuses on spotlighting health service delivery in all districts of the country. The train’s first stop is Moyamba. Its main objectives here are to assess the quality of current services offered in health facilities, together with the District Health Management Team and community leaders, to explore possible ways of improving patient care.
Trains’ first point of call was at the Moyamba Government Hospital, where Dr. Demby and his team, were impressed by the amazing array of services provided at the facility. Among other things, the hospital offers care for mental health, with a specialist on call, it runs a dental clinic, provides nutrition services, eye care, a pediatric center, a regular outpatient unit, and a very impressive drug store that is well stocked with medical supplies.
The WHO Country Representative, Dr. George Ameh, aptly describes the hospital as a “district plus” hospital. For the Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby, Moyamba Government Hospital exemplifies just what the President wishes to see in health facilities across the country.
Adding to that, an ongoing construction of an ultra-modern 100-bed hospital in Moyamba Town. When completed, this new hospital will be a complementary referral facility to help respond to the healthcare needs of the over 350,000 inhabitants of people in this part of the country.
Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby, and his visiting delegation were taken on a conducted tour of the Government hospital to see the types of services rendered, opportunities that can better be exploited, what the existing gaps are, and possible ways of addressing them.
The excitement was overwhelming! The people of Moyamba have displayed an incredible reception of this brilliant initiative and they have committed to helping the Government, MoH and partners transform healthcare for the people of this district.
