The Monument and Relics Commission organized a tour of Freetown’s historic, cultural, and touristic sites for pupils from 10 secondary schools as part of June’s Monument and Relics month and the “Tourism for All” campaign.
The tour aimed to develop students’ interest in history and enhance their knowledge by providing a deeper understanding of the people and places that have shaped society, sparking their imagination beyond the classroom.
The tour began at the National Museum, where Education and Outreach Officer Olivette Bernette oriented the pupils on Sierra Leone’s national identity, ethnicity, and intangible heritage. At the Railway Museum, Senior Tour Guide Mohamed Jabbie explained the history and relevance of the railway, showcasing relics. Bernette also guided the pupils through other historic sites, including Old Fourah Bay College, Old Wharf Steps, Thomas Peters Statue, Saint George Cathedral Church, Big Market, Maroon Church, and the Cotton Tree.
The pupils expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs for the opportunity to explore these historic sites and broaden their horizons regarding Sierra Leone’s significant monuments and relics.
