The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development (MoPED), through its Planning, Policy, and Research Department, has held a stakeholder consultation in Sulima, Pujehun District, aimed at shaping Sierra Leone’s Blue Economy strategy.
The engagement brought together community leaders, policymakers, and technical experts to explore opportunities in tourism, fisheries, trade, environmental conservation, and climate resilience.
Senior Economist at MoPED, Manzo Kargbo, explained that the Blue Economy focuses on harnessing ocean and water resources to drive economic growth, improve livelihoods, and foster social inclusion while protecting marine ecosystems.
Technical consultant Tejan Tarawallie highlighted the importance of prioritizing mangrove protection, renewable energy, oil production, transportation, and fisheries management. He noted that a well-structured Blue Economy can help address climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss.
Paramount Chief Mustapha I. Massaquio welcomed the initiative, praising Planning Minister Kenyeh Barlay for extending national development discussions to Pujehun. He said the exercise reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive and community-driven policymaking.
Participants outlined key priorities, including improved road networks, cold storage facilities for fish, jetty construction, fishing skills training, access to finance, and stronger legal frameworks.
Insights gathered from the consultation will inform policies, rules, and regulations to ensure Sierra Leone’s coastal and marine resources contribute to sustainable development and better livelihoods for local communities.
