Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr embarked on an encouraging visit to the Kroo Bay Community yesterday, November 5th, 2023, to witness the burgeoning construction of a new primary school.
This significant project is made possible through the generous funding of the Swiss-based charitable foundation, Sustain For Life, spearheaded by the vision and collaboration initiated by former Councillor Murray Conteh.
The upcoming primary school will encompass 12 classrooms, a staff room, a computer lab, a library, and a community hall. Its establishment marks a pivotal move approved by the Freetown City Council, involving the demolition of the old community center to create space for this vital educational infrastructure. The school aims to serve the educational needs of numerous underprivileged children within the disadvantaged Kroo Bay Community. Anticipated to conclude construction around June next year, the structure will be handed over to both Freetown City Council and the local community.
During the visit, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr engaged in discussions with Sustain for Life Founder Massimo Gini and Africa Manager Thierry Younga. The discourse centered on potential expansions beyond the school, encompassing enhancements to the Community Health Centre, the development of a community access road, and the reconstruction of housing units following a recent fire disaster. Additionally, the project includes the construction of four toilets and shower cubicles adjacent to the primary school.
Noteworthy community stakeholders, such as Chief Kabempa, Councillor Abdulai Kabba, Gibril Jalloh of the Sierra Leone Autistic Society, Deputy Mayor Kweku Lisk, and Councillor Umaru Bangura, were part of the site visit. Their involvement emphasizes the crucial role of community engagement in ensuring the successful implementation of this impactful initiative.
The collaborative efforts between Sustain For Life and the Freetown City Council represent a promising step towards providing essential infrastructure and support to the Kroo Bay Community, fostering hope and prospects for a brighter future.
