The administration of Njala University has publicly dismissed recent allegations made by Vantage Newspaper’s “Busy Bee” column, which claimed that Vice Chancellor and Principal Alhaji Professor Bashir Mohamed Koroma engaged in unlawful court appointments and intimidation of staff.
In a statement released on June 26, the university emphasized that those claims are unfounded and misleading. Professor Koroma, who has been in office since September 1, 2023, has notably prioritized transparency and innovation in his leadership.
Under his administration, the administration confirmed that payroll allowances have been consistently paid despite challenges with government funding, and the university has successfully implemented the first phase of the SAGE financial software, with plans for a second phase to enhance accountability.
Njala University reportedly received its first unqualified audit opinion from external auditors and installed a 100kW solar grid, providing 24-hour electricity access to students for the first time in history, affirming that ongoing infrastructure and sanitation improvements are also being supported by government and donor funding.
Addressing the allegations of unlawful appointments, the university clarified that all recruitment processes adhere to Section 11 of the Universities Act of 2021. The appointments are made through a merit-based system overseen by the Appointments and Promotions Committee, ensuring transparency throughout.
The university also highlighted his commitment to staff welfare, noting that NLe 500,000 is allocated annually for academic research, alongside significant tuition waivers and interest-free loans for staff, confirming that over 20 staff members have benefited from study leave support, marking a record for the institution.
While acknowledging ongoing utility challenges, the administration attributed those issues to broader national infrastructure problems rather than administrative shortcomings. Efforts are reportedly underway to improve water and electricity access through solar and borehole projects.
In response to claims of intimidation, the administration reiterated that Professor Koroma promotes a consultative leadership style, characterized by an open-door policy and regular interactions with both staff and students.
The university affirmed that Professor Koroma’s tenure is fully compliant with the Universities Act, and he is legally serving the remainder of his four-year term. The university expressed continuous dedication to academic excellence and integrity, urging the media and public to reject false narratives and engage in fact-based discussions.
This article is coming from his office under his directives. This is a direct statement from the VC himself. If you want to ascertain actual facts about his leadership, go to Njala campus and make an investigation. He is the worst and most corrupt VC that Njala has ever had. Those who know him personally we not listen to such cover up statement.
