Njala University Bo Campus has formally inaugurated its newly elected Student Union Government (SUG), marking a new chapter in student representation on campus.
Presiding over the ceremony, Vice Chancellor and Principal, Prof. Bashiru Mohamed Koroma, congratulated the incoming student leaders and emphasized the significance of the inauguration.
Drawing from his 24 years of service at Njala University, including 22 years in leadership positions, Prof. Koroma shared insights on effective leadership. He underscored the importance of unity, collaboration, empathy, and active listening.
“To be a good leader, one has to collaborate, show empathy, listen to others, and not think you know all,” he stated.
He further highlighted the importance of integrity, accountability, and transparency in governance, urging the newly elected officials to uphold these principles throughout their tenure.
The Vice Chancellor also encouraged students to accord due respect to their elected president by addressing him as “Mr. President” rather than using informal nicknames, noting that leadership titles carry responsibilities that must be respected.
He assured the new administration of the university’s full support in achieving its goals.
In his remarks, the immediate past SUG President, Joseph Jokia, congratulated the new leadership and reflected on the achievements and challenges of his tenure. He acknowledged persistent issues faced by student governments, including missing grades and poor hostel conditions.
“No student union government will come and be able to do everything. This is a fact. I must state it here,” he said.
Jokia also commended the Dassy-led administration and expressed satisfaction over the acquisition of a student bus during their term in office.
