Twenty-four nurses have been awarded diplomas in Neurosurgery Care following the successful completion of a specialised hybrid training programme facilitated by Mission Brain in partnership with the University of Sierra Leone Teaching Hospitals Complex (USLTHC) and the Ministry of Health.

The certificates were presented during a Connaught Hospital Management Meeting held today, marking a significant step forward in efforts to strengthen neurosurgical services in Sierra Leone.

The programme, delivered through a combination of online and in-person sessions, forms part of a broader collaboration aimed at rebuilding and expanding specialised neurosurgical healthcare across the country.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Allieu Kamara revealed that the partnership between the Ministry of Health, USLTHC, and Mission Brain has also enabled the sponsorship of two Sierra Leonean doctors for advanced training in neurosurgery. He noted that since returning to Sierra Leone in 2024, he has been actively contributing to improving neurosurgical care at Connaught Hospital, while his colleague continues specialised studies abroad.

Dr Kamara highlighted the establishment of a Neurological Unit at Connaught Hospital as a key milestone in advancing specialised healthcare delivery. He stressed that equipping nurses with neurosurgical care skills is critical to effectively managing neurological cases and improving patient outcomes.

He also expressed appreciation to the Chairperson of the USLTHC Board of Administration, Dr Sonia Spencer, the Chief Medical Director, Professor Kehinde Oluwadiya, Connaught Hospital management, the Ministry of Health, Mission Brain, and other partners for their continued commitment to building healthcare capacity in Sierra Leone.

In her remarks, the Senior Matron congratulated the nurses for completing what she described as a rigorous and demanding programme. She noted that although many initially expressed interest, the 24 graduates distinguished themselves through dedication and resilience, describing them as pioneers in specialised neurosurgery nursing care at the institution.

She further commended Mission Brain not only for providing professional training and certification, but also for motivating participants through thoughtful gestures of appreciation presented alongside their diplomas.

The certification ceremony underscores growing collaboration among healthcare institutions and partners to enhance specialised medical services and improve patient care outcomes nationwide.
