Violet Gbassay Kargbo, protocol officer to the Ex-Mayor of Freetown City Council (FCC), Yvonne Akie Sawyer testified before Magistrate Marke Ngegba at the Pademba Road Court No. 1 in Freetown, in the ongoing preliminary investigation into the alleged disorderly behavior of the former Mayor.
The Ex-Mayor is before the Court on two counts of charges of obstruction of Police duty and disorderly behavior contrary to the laws of Sierra Leone.
Police alleged that on Saturday 17 September 2022, at the Airport Police Division, Lungi, Kaffu Bulom Chiefdom, Port Loko District. The accused Yvonne Akie Sawyer obstructed Sergeant Richard Junior Caulker and Corporal 12225 Fanta Fofanah; while executing their lawful duties and did behave in a disorderly manner.
According to the report, the fifth defense witness, witness, who happens to be the protocol officer to the Ex-Mayor; that on Saturday 17 September 2022, the Former Mayor and Councillor Gibril Turay went to Sea Coach at Aberdeen in Freetown where they boarded a sea taxi to Lungi.
She further said that when the Mayor and Councillor Turay arrived at the Lungi International Airport, they went through security checks. Adding that another protocol officer was assigned to the Ex-Mayor.
The witness continued that the Mayor and Councillor Turay met with the Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Dr. Francis Kai Kai, and the information minister.
She also recalled that the Ex-Mayor introduced Councillor Turay to both cabinet ministers. She narrated that while at the VIP Lounge, Councillor Turay left for the afternoon prayers.
The witness added that she left the airport shortly after she spoke to the Ex-Mayor.
After the witness testimony in Curt, State Prosecutor Yusif Isaac Sesay Esq. declined to cross-examine the fifth Defence witness.
Defence Counsel Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara Esq however, informed the Court that he will lead two more witnesses on the next adjourned date.
Magistrate Ngegba adjourned the matter to Monday 27 March 2023, for another hearing.
