The Inspector General of Police (IGP), William Fayia Sellu, on Tuesday officially launched the First Edition of the Boxing Forces Championship 2026, describing the initiative as a landmark effort to foster unity, discipline, and camaraderie among Sierra Leone’s security institutions.
The launch ceremony took place at the Police Wives Association Multipurpose Hall, Kingtom Police Barracks, in Freetown. Speaking at the event, IGP Sellu expressed pride in witnessing what he described as a celebration of strength, courage, and character. He highlighted that the championship provides a platform for members of the security forces to showcase their talent, physical preparedness, and fighting spirit in a controlled and respectful sporting environment.
“Boxing builds character and discipline. When our officers step into the ring with confidence, compete with honour, and uphold the highest standards of sportsmanship, they reflect the very values we stand for,” IGP Sellu said. He added that while victory is important, integrity and respect are paramount.

He further encouraged participants: “The ring may be small, but the courage within it is limitless. Today, our forces stand united. Under pressure, power is built. Are you ready to witness power? Are you ready to witness discipline? Are you ready to witness warriors in action, where champions are made?”
Representing the Chief of Defence Staff, Francis Kanu emphasized the importance of resilience, teamwork, and mutual respect within the security sector. He described the championship as a vital competitive platform that promotes physical fitness, mental alertness, and leadership development. On behalf of the Armed Forces, he pledged continued support for collaborative sporting initiatives and wished all participants a successful and injury-free tournament.

The Head of the Fire Force, Naseru Alie Kamanda Bongay, also attended the launch, demonstrating solidarity and support for the initiative.
The President of the Sierra Leone Boxing Association, who also represents the African Boxing Confederation, hailed the launch as a historic moment. He thanked the Sierra Leone Correctional Service for hosting the event, particularly following the recent renovation of the National Stadium. He encouraged institutional heads to prioritise the recruitment of young and physically fit personnel to enhance participation in future championships.
Director Lamin Kojie of the Ministry of Sports and the National Sports Authority described the championship as a symbol of national unity and cohesion, praising the Sierra Leone Police leadership for spearheading the initiative. He stressed that the competition not only identifies talent but also strengthens bonds among security forces while promoting both physical and mental readiness.

The Boxing Forces Championship 2026 is widely regarded as a strategic initiative to use sport as a tool for national cohesion, institutional collaboration, and youth empowerment within the security sector. The launch concluded with the official unveiling of the championship banner and trophies, marking the beginning of what promises to be a landmark sporting event for Sierra Leone’s security institutions.
