During the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) weekly media update on April 18th, 2023, Detective Inspector Joshua Moisa, who is attached to the Criminal Investigation Department, announced to reporters that all 31 suspects arrested at the Makeni station for the killing of ASP Mathew Moiwah Gbanya, the Regional Commander for the North, have been released.
Detective Inspector Moisa clarified that the suspects were arrested randomly during the execution of their duty to bring the perpetrators to justice. However, after conducting a thorough screening of all 31 suspects, they were unable to gather sufficient evidence to charge them.
He went on to reveal that the investigation is still ongoing to identify the individuals responsible for the crime.
The late Gbanya was shot at close range in his private vehicle on Station Road in Makeni while he was purchasing a fan and water.
Detective Inspector Moisa confirmed that Gbanya had spent the Easter holiday with his family in Makeni before the incident occurred.
Furthermore, Patrick Johson, the Director of Human Resources for the police, stated that the late Gbanya’s body will be laid out at the Police Training School on Thursday for funeral rites.
