Freetown, the capital city of Sierra Leone, has experienced persistent torrential rains from July to September every year for over a decade, resulting in loss of lives and properties. As the city continues to experience heavy rains this month (source: Weather.com), the Chairman, Board of Directors, management, and staff of Rokel Commercial Bank, under the leadership of Dr. Ekundayo Walton Gilpin, wish all customers, employees, contractors, community members, potential customers, and nationals and non-nationals in Sierra Leone to stay safe and take necessary precautions against torrential rains and flooding.

Heavy rain can cause pooling, overflowing rivers, runoffs, and flooding, which may result in evacuations, power outages, supply shortages, traffic obstructions, road closures, infrastructure damage, loss of properties, trees falling on poles, collapse of buildings, and debris around important places. Floodwater is heavily polluted with viruses, bacteria, and parasites, posing serious health risks when building materials and furniture become wet.

A flood event can be extremely stressful and traumatic. It’s crucial to take care of yourself post-flood by reaching out to family, friends, or local support networks for support.

The following precautions are relevant during heavy rainfall:

●Wear protective clothing and seek indoor shelter.

●Stay away from windows and doors during heavy rain and strong winds.

●Avoid roadway underpasses, drainage ditches, low-lying areas, and areas where water collects, as they can unexpectedly flood or overflow.

●Avoid driving in heavy rain due to poor visibility. If possible, park and wait until the rain slows or stops.

●Do not try to drive across a flooded road. Water may be deeper and stronger than it appears and may contain debris, sharp objects, potholes, or electrical wires.

●Vehicles can become unstable or swept away in fast-flowing or pooling floodwaters.

●Stay away from power lines or electrical wires.

●Monitor alerts and weather reports for flash flood warnings and updates.

●Use a reliable umbrella or raincoat. Rubber shoes are also a good option.

●Avoid wet shoes and socks to prevent getting cold easily.

Deforestation in Sierra Leone, particularly in the hills for unplanned housing and forest areas, has adversely affected lives and properties.

RCBank encourages all Sierra Leoneans to plant trees to complement government efforts in reducing stormwater runoff, which effectively reduces erosion, pollution in waterways, and the effects of flooding. Since 2019, the bank has engaged in tree planting and maintaining the RCBank Tree Planting Site at Masiaka Petifu.
