The case of Abdul Kpaka, the businessman accused of beating his girlfriend, Sia Fatu Kamara, leading to her death, took another turn in court last week.
The case, which first caught attention in August 2024, saw Kpaka arrested and charged after serious allegations emerged on social media.
Following an initial hearing in Magistrate Court, Magistrate Santigie Bangure sent the case to the High Court for further trial. Once in the High Court, the defense lawyer, AT Koroma, requested that a jury trial be held, but prosecutor Yusif Isac Sesay disagreed, arguing that the trial should be handled by a judge alone.
Justice Momoh Jah Stevens, who was initially presiding over the case, agreed with the prosecutor, stating that the case would be tried by a judge alone. Justice Stevens also made it clear that Kpaka would not be granted bail because of the seriousness of the charges.
Several witnesses have already testified, but the case has faced delays. Recently, a Supreme Court ruling due to procedural concerns brought the case back into the spotlight. In a surprising development, Justice Alfred Ganda replaced Justice Stevens, and this time, 12 jurors -11 men and 1 woman sat in the courtroom to review the evidence.
During the latest session, prosecutor Yusif Isac Sesay requested more time to secure additional witnesses. The defense, however, urged the court to speed up the trial. Justice Ganda decided not to grant bail to the accused and ordered him to return to the male correctional center. The case has now been adjourned until March 7, 2025.
The trial continues to draw public attention, and many are eagerly waiting for the next steps in this ongoing legal battle.
