The Sierra Leone passport is the 7th most expensive passport in the African region according to social media fact site, Africa Facts Zone.
Africa Facts Zone said on X that Sierra Leone is listed among several other countries in a ranking that also includes Cameroon, which holds top position, followed by DR Congo in second place and Zimbabwe in third.
The most expensive passport in Africa according the site is Cameroon costing $181 while DR Congo ranks second with a $178 cost attached.
The site said that a Sierra Leonean passport costs $100, the same with war-torn South Sudan and a few dollars short of Uganda’s $109 passport.
Sierra Leone’s passport was among the least expensive in Africa years ago before the country entered into a deal with a private company called Netpage Africa.
The partnership which saw, the country’s passport being digitised, also saw the cost more than double.
In a nation where the minimum wage is less than $40, many locals vent their anger on the exorbitant cost of their new passport. Opposition to the new cost reasoned that many locals would not be able to afford the passport with that cost.
Meanwhile, the government said that the passport is expensive due to its digitisation.
The Sierra Leone passport is among the most sought-after passports in Africa with carriers having visa-free access to over 40 destinations.
Visa Index said Sierra Leone passport holders can visit 63 destinations without obtaining a visa prior to travel including 42 countries that are entirely visa-free, 20 countries offering visas on arrival, and 1 destination requiring an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).
