Sierra Leoneans Demands For Reversal of The Increase in Cost of Electricity
Binta Koroma Due to the drastic increase in the cost of electricity over the past months, Sierra Leoneans have written the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA), demanding for the cut down in prices of the units.
“We are extremely happy with the pending reversal of the high data fees recently introduced by the telecom companies in the country but the increase in the cost of electricity over the past months needs even more urgent attention. Old Le300,000 used to give about 200.8 units (Le1,494 per unit). Old Le300,000 now gives only 110.2 units (Le2,722 per unit). This represents an increase in the cost per unit of 82.21%. How can workers on the minimum wage of Old Le600,000 cope ?
With the surge in the depreciation of the leones and increase in fuel costs pushing general inflation to the very high, effectively translating into an increase in the cost of living and posing difficulties for business owners who have to buy USD to get their products from foreign markets, it is expected that due consideration is given to the situation at hand and further increases are completely discarded.
We are all happy about the potential reversal of the internet charges but we are kindly pleading that the cost of electricity be reversed too. This’s urgent!
