Ten Sierra Leonean students have graduated as medical doctors from the People’s Friendship University of Russia (RUDN), marking the largest single cohort of Sierra Leonean medical graduates produced by the institution.
The milestone was announced by Sierra Leone’s Embassy in Moscow, which described the achievement as a significant contribution to the country’s growing pool of internationally trained medical professionals.
Among the graduates, Dr Alfred Osman Kamara and Dr Hawanatu B. Marrah received Distinctions, also known as Red Diplomas, in recognition of their outstanding academic performance. Dr Kamara emerged as the overall best medical student of the university’s 2026 graduating class.
Delivering the valedictory address on behalf of the graduating students, Dr Kamara expressed appreciation to President Julius Maada Bio, the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education, the Government of the Russian Federation, and Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Russia, Mohamed Yongawo, for their continued support toward expanding educational opportunities for Sierra Leonean students.
The graduation of the ten medical doctors brings renewed attention to the educational partnership between Sierra Leone and Russia, particularly in the field of medical training and human resource development.
According to the embassy, the RUDN graduates form part of a wider group of 35 Sierra Leonean students who completed studies at various institutions across the Russian Federation in 2026. The additional graduates earned qualifications ranging from bachelor’s degrees to master’s and doctoral degrees in different disciplines.
The latest achievement is expected to strengthen Sierra Leone’s healthcare workforce while highlighting the growing number of Sierra Leonean students pursuing higher education in Russian universities.
