The Executive Director of the Welfare Society for the Disabled (WESOFOD-SL) and National President of the Sierra Leone Union on Disability Issues (SLuDI), Joseph Alieu Kamara, led a monitoring visit to the Village of Hope in Pujehun District, where construction of a new Skills Training Centre is underway.
The visit was part of efforts to assess progress on the Empowering Youths and Women with Disability for Independent and Sustainable Living (TECH-VOC) project, funded by Trócaire. The initiative aims to enhance economic independence for persons with disabilities through inclusive vocational opportunities.
Project officials said the centre will provide modern tools, vocational skills training for 20 young people with disabilities and 10 parents, and business and financial management education. Initial training will focus on soap making, tailoring, and bead making.
Kamara expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of construction, commending staff for their dedication. “The rapid progress suggests the facility will soon be completed and operational, enabling training activities to begin shortly,” he said.
WESOFOD-SL’s Pujehun District Coordinator, Mohamed Sillah, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to delivering quality outcomes, while Skills Centre Coordinator Mohamed Alhaji Sheriff pledged to accelerate construction to meet project timelines.
Once completed, the centre is expected to become a hub for empowering persons with disabilities in Pujehun, fostering self-reliance and sustainable livelihoods.
