Six people are feared dead after drowning in the Moa River while celebrating a friend’s birthday, according to police and eyewitnesses.

The victims, including four females and two males, were residents of the Kpayama community. They had gathered at Kailodo Beach along the river to mark the birthday of the founder of their club, known as GF.

Local residents and fishermen launched an immediate rescue effort using canoes and fishing nets. Several survivors managed to swim to safety but were said to be in shock.

Police and community volunteers have begun a search and recovery operation.

Community leaders called the incident heartbreaking, noting that the Moa River is a major transport route for villages lacking proper bridges and safe transportation systems. During the rainy season, rising water levels and strong currents make the river especially dangerous.

The river has long been an important source of livelihood and transportation for communities in eastern Sierra Leone.
