The President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists, Ahmed Sahid Nasralla has admonished the Inspector-General of Police, William Fayia Sellu to maintain the cordiality between the police and the media.

Nasralla released his statement hours after the IG is said to have been in a fallout with popular Journalist, Thomas Dixon. Dixon went missing at least two hours after he referred to the IG as “arrogant” on a Facebook post following an alleged interference in an investigation matter at the West End Police Station on Adelaide Street in Freetown.

It is against this backdrop that the SLAJ President intervened into the matter hours after it was being reported that Dixon was missing on Saturday afternoon.

Nasralla in the form of de-escalating the situation urged and admonished the IG in “maintaining the relationship between SLAJ and the security sector”.

The IG assured me he had considered my advice,” the President said.

He added that, Sellu, however, asked him to remind the press to be professional in their duty.

Despite assurance from the IG regarding the bond between the police and the press, Nasralla urged the IG to ensure the safety of Dixon who was afraid for his life on Saturday afternoon.

We now call on the IG to publicly guarantee the safety and security of Thomas Dixon, allowing him to return to his normal activities without fear,” Nasralla said.

This recent incident outlines some of the challenges faced by journalists in the discharge of their duty in the West African country.
