The Sierra Leone Police (SLP), in partnership with the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA), has launched a large-scale operation to clear obstructed streets along the eastern corridor of Freetown.
The exercise, which commenced this week, aims to restore order, enhance road safety, and ensure the smooth movement of vehicles and pedestrians.
Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at the Senior Police Officers’ Mess in Kingtom, the SLP’s Director of Operations, Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Martin John Senesie, outlined the key objectives of the initiative.
He said the first phase targets the Kissy by-pass road commonly known as Old Road and will gradually extend to Calaba Town and other areas along the eastern corridor.
AIG Senesie noted that the operation seeks to reclaim public roads that have been turned into private garages by mechanics and vehicle owners.
“Many people have turned the streets into workshops, and that poses serious risks to road users,” he said.
He emphasized that the exercise is not a one-off action but part of a long-term strategy to enforce law and order. Officers will be positioned along targeted routes to ensure compliance and prevent illegal street occupations from reoccurring.
The persistent congestion along Kissy Avenue and surrounding routes has long affected commuters, emergency service operations, and local businesses. AIG Senesie added that the initiative is not only about improving traffic flow but also about enhancing the city’s overall outlook.
“We want Freetown to be a city where vehicles can move freely, day and night,” he noted.
The eastern corridor one of the busiest stretches of the capital has suffered from chronic overcrowding caused by indiscriminate parking, roadside garages, and trading encroachments.
The joint SLP–SLRSA operation represents a renewed commitment to urban order and road discipline, signaling broader efforts to modernize Freetown’s transportation system and improve daily life for residents.
