The Sports Writers Association of Sierra Leone (SWASAL) has issued a strong condemnation regarding the violent assault on Alusine Rehme Wilson, the Chairman of SWASAL North, during a Premier League match at the Wusum Stadium in Makeni on Sunday, 30th March, 2025.

The incident occurred as Mr. Wilson attempted to conduct post-match interviews with players from Bo Rangers after their clash against Wusum Stars. Allegedly, a group of unruly supporters from Wusum Stars launched a physical attack on him, resulting in injury and emotional distress.

In addition to the assault on Mr. Wilson, there were reports of indiscriminate stone-throwing and verbal abuse directed at match officials during the same event.

SWASAL expressed deep concern over the incident, emphasizing that such acts of violence have no place in sports or society. The association highlighted Mr. Wilson’s professionalism and dedication to his journalistic responsibilities which were met with unwarranted aggression.

In a statement, SWASAL stood in solidarity with Mr. Wilson and all journalists who work tirelessly to bring stories to the public, often at great personal risk. The association has called on relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the violence, demanding swift action to identify and hold accountable those responsible, including a ring leader whose identity is still unknown.

SWASAL further urged the Premier League Board (PLB) Media Committee and officials from Wusum Stars to cooperate fully in seeking justice for Mr. Wilson. They stressed the need for improved safety protocols for journalists at sporting events to prevent such incidents in the future.

In the concluding statement, SWASAL reaffirmed its commitment to defending the rights and safety of media professionals, stating that it will not tolerate any form of intimidation or violence against its members. The association went forward to advocate for a secure environment where journalists can perform their duties without fear of assault or aggression.
