The Africa Centre for Strategic Studies, in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy in Freetown, has concluded a three-day online workshop aimed at parliamentary and institutional oversight of Sierra Leone’s defence and security sector.

The workshop brought together Members of Parliament alongside key representatives from the Office of National Security, the Central Intelligence and Security Unit, the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces, and the National Arms and Ammunition Commission.

The engagement held over three half-day sessions featured contributions from experts across Africa who shared best practices on establishing clear oversight frameworks, scrutinising security budgets, and strengthening collaboration with auditors, anti-corruption institutions, and civil society organisations.

Discussions centred on improving transparency and accountability within the security sector, with emphasis on the critical role of Parliament and oversight bodies in ensuring effective governance.

Organisers noted that strengthening Sierra Leone’s security institutions not only supports national stability but also aligns with broader U.S. security interests, contributing to a safer and more secure future for both Sierra Leoneans and Americans.
