The Parliament of Sierra Leone has officially commissioned a newly refurbished access ramp and pedestrian walkway for persons with disabilities.

The reconstruction project, carried out by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), was completed and unveiled on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, to much appreciation from parliamentary leadership.

The renovated ramp and connecting walkway bridge link the Parliament’s Administrative Building to the historic Old Building and other precincts within the parliamentary complex. The structure, previously described as a “deathtrap” due to its deteriorated state, posed serious risks to physically challenged individuals, staff, and visitors alike.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Deputy Clerk of Parliament, Mr. Gilbert Bosco N’habay, expressed heartfelt gratitude to UNOPS on behalf of the parliamentary leadership and staff. He acknowledged the timely completion of the project, emphasizing its importance in promoting safety and accessibility within the legislative grounds.

“This ramp was once a danger to our staff and visitors, particularly those who are physically challenged. Thanks to the swift and professional intervention of UNOPS, the renovated walkway now offers safe passage and reinforces Parliament’s commitment to inclusivity,” N’habay stated.

He further lauded the European Union for funding the project and reiterated Parliament’s appreciation to UNOPS for their continued contribution to nation-building.

The refurbishment of the ramp forms part of broader efforts by development partners to strengthen institutional infrastructure and accessibility in Sierra Leone, particularly within key governance institutions like Parliament.

The renovation not only enhances mobility but also symbolizes a growing recognition of the need for disability-friendly public spaces in the country.
