The Security forces in Kambia District have arrested a 27-year-old Sierra Leonean national, identified as Abdul Akim Bangura, for allegedly being in possession of a large quantity of suspected Tramadol tablets during a stop-and-search operation at the Rogberay Joint Security Checkpoint in Gbileh Chiefdom.

According to reports, Bangura who is said to be based in the United States but currently residing in Allen Town, Freetown was apprehended on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, as part of a routine operation conducted by the Local Unit Commander (LUC) and the joint security team stationed at the checkpoint.

The ongoing operation is part of a broader national effort to curb the trafficking and smuggling of illicit substances, including Kush, Tramadol, Cocaine, and Cannabis Sativa, which continue to pose serious threats to public health, youth safety, and national security.

During the search, officers reportedly discovered 1,287 cards suspected to contain 250-milligram Tramadol tablets, along with two cups filled with red tablets believed to be of the same dosage. The drugs were allegedly found in the possession of the suspect.

Following the discovery, Abdul Akim Bangura was immediately taken into custody for questioning. The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has since launched a full-scale investigation to trace the origin and intended destination of the seized substances.

Authorities say the arrest highlights the government’s heightened vigilance at border checkpoints and reaffirms the SLP’s commitment to combating the illegal drug trade that continues to endanger young people and undermine national stability.

Security officials at the Rogberay checkpoint have pledged to intensify surveillance and collaboration with sister security agencies to ensure Sierra Leone’s borders remain secure against drug traffickers and smugglers.

This latest arrest forms part of a growing number of successful operations by law enforcement targeting the illicit drug trade, a national menace that has drawn increased attention from both the government and international partners.
