In a matter between Saidu Tholley (husband) and Mariatu Koroma (wife) that was tried in a local court in Sinkunia, Falaba District have proven Mariatu Koroma guilty of publicly insulting her husband and his parents.
Saidu Tholley, the husband, alleged in court that his wife accused him of marrying a second wife in a nearby village between May 31 and June 1.
Tholley denied the allegation, and it was later proven that the husband didn’t marry a second wife the allegations were false.
At the hearing, the court didn’t ask either party to repeat in open court the alleged insulting words
After listening to both parties accounts of the case the local court’s chairman found Mariatu Koroma guilty and a fine of one hundred thousand Leones was levied against her.
Responding to the verdict, Mariatu Koroma who didn’t have any legal representation at the trial paid the court fine.
She expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the case, describing the court as a court of real justice.
She also implicitly appreciated her husband for bringing her to court, instead of physically assaulting her as it’s commonly the case in such instances.
“It’s good for someone to take another person to court in order to avoid violence, and this’s what happen today in court. Still, I love my husband. But the only thing is, I’m not going to allow him to marry another wife or else, he’ll continue to bring me to court every time,” Koroma said.
Tholley, the husband, declined to comment.
However, court chairman said men also have the right to bring suit against their wives should they feel that they’ve been wronged. And that any such matter will be treated fairly by the court, according to the chairman. He encouraged everyone to live in harmony.
