The Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Francis Ben Kaifala, has sparked public debate after suggesting that the government may need to consider reintroducing the death penalty for individuals involved in the importation and trade of kush, a deadly synthetic drug ravaging communities across Sierra Leone.

In a post shared on his verified Facebook account, Commissioner Kaifala described kush as a killer and urged collective action to protect the nation’s youth from its devastating effects.

Kush kills… Let’s work together to keep our youth from being destroyed by it. CUT the supply… Death penalty for its importers and traders? Let’s bring it back?” he wrote.

His statement, framed as an open question, has stirred public discussion over the severity of the measures needed to tackle the escalating kush crisis, which has been linked to rising mental health issues, crime, and loss of young lives.

While Kaifala did not make a definitive call for the reinstatement of capital punishment, his post underscores growing frustration among citizens and public officials over the country’s struggle to curb drug trafficking and the widespread abuse of kush.
