Former Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission in the All People’s Congress (APC) government, Ady Macauley, has publicly challenged President Julius Maada Bio’s “father of democracy” title after failing to demonstrate his commitment to democracy by reversing a recent appointment decision involving Edmond Sylvester Alpha.

Alpha was vetted by the Sierra Leone Parliament recently to serve as the Chief Electoral Commissioner for the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL).

In a statement reportedly attributed to Macauley, he claimed that some supporters of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), as well as certain government officials, have described President Bio as “the father of democracy” in Sierra Leone.

Responding to that characterisation, Macauley called on the president to take what he described as a decisive democratic step. “I tell you now is the time for President Bio to prove it that he is truly the father of democracy in the country,” the statement read.

Macauley further urged the president to “democratically sit down and reverse the Edmond Sylvester Alpha’s appointment decision if he is for democracy as his supporters and government officials say.”

He concluded his remarks with a direct but respectful appeal to the president, stating: “Now is the time Mr President,” Ady Macauley said.

The statement reflects growing political debate over recent government decisions, with opposition figures increasingly calling for actions they say would reinforce democratic governance. The presidency has not yet publicly responded to Macauley’s remarks at the time of reporting.

Currently, the main opposition is protesting Alpha’s appointment pointing out that he was among those responsible for the alleged rigging of the 2023 elections in favour of President Bio and his SLPP. Alpha’s appointment has resulted to a standoff between the ruling party and the main opposition with the latter’s members of parliament boycotting the House until Alpha is romoved from his position.

By some indication, it appears that the government is unwilling to backtrack on their decision with the Presidential Spokesman, Alpha Kanu claiming that the government is willing to work with other political parties if the APC continues their boycott.
