Sierra Leone, on Monday, May 25 2026, joined other African countries to celebrate African Day, marking its first year of participation, with the theme “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063”.
The event organized by diplomatic missions in the country was held at the Miatta Civic Centre and featured dignitaries from other African countries. The event commenced with the African Union Anthem, followed by the Sierra Leone National Anthem.
Speaking as the Guest of Honour, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alhaji Timothy Musa Kabba, elaborated on this year’s theme, which he said is not just a development issue but a basic human necessity, though millions of Africans in vulnerable communities still face these challenges.
He disclosed that the African Day 2026 theme resonates with Sierra Leone’s national development priorities, adding that the government is committed to improving water security and strengthening sanitation infrastructure, as investment in these areas is investment in human capital, such as education, gender equality, health care, etc.

He further stated that as they reflect on the theme for this year, they should also reaffirm their commitment to African Union Agender 2063 ‘the Africa we want’.
Different speakers, including the Ambassador of Egypt and High Commissioner of the Republic of Gambia, also elaborated on the theme, linking it to the African Union Agenda 20263.
The event featured a performance of the National Dance Trope and acrobats, organised by the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs.
The event climaxed with a visit to the exhibition stands and a degustation of African flavours, with the absence of Sierra Leonean dishes, which the minister committed to fully partake in coming years.

Africa Day is observed annually on May 25 to commemorate the 1963 founding of the Organisation of African Unity (now the African Union).
