Africell is set to introduce Sierra Leone’s first 5G network within a year after authorities granted the company 5G spectrum.
The Chief Executive Officer and Chairman (CEO) of Africell, Ziad Dalloul has said that Africell will make 5G useful and accessible in Sierra Leone.
“Africell has already pioneered 4G coverage and mobile money services in our operating markets. Receiving 5 spectrum in Sierra Leone is a big milestone” Dalloul said.
5G is believed to optimise digital connectivity and provide ultra-fast data to homes and for businesses not only in Sierra Leone but the entire sub-Saharan region where installation of fibre optic cables has been a daunting task.
Allocation of this spectrum by authorities to Africell means that the company can now develop 5G connectivity within a year.
The Minister of Information and Communication, Mohamed Rahman Swaray said that the network has the potential to bridge the digital divide, build resilience and transform the region’s digital economy.
“The granting of 5G spectrum to Africell for trial is an important step for Sierra Leone’s digital system, the Minister said.
The Director of PURA, the country’s telecommunications regulator, Daniel Kaitibi said that 5G could unlock vital additional productivity in sectors which will drive economic growth and social development.
“By allocating this spectrum, we are inviting Africell to start preparing for a wider rollout of 5G in Sierra Leone which will help transform these sectors,” Kaitiba said.
