The Africa Safety Award for Excellence (AfriSAFE), the continent’s leading safety award and advocacy organisation, has launched a bold new campaign aimed at promoting safety awareness across all aspects of daily life.
The campaign, titled #MyCloseCall, harnesses the power of real-life stories to highlight near-miss incidents and the critical lessons they offer.
AfriSAFE is using its expansive reach of over 500 million individuals across the continent to drive this vital message home.
The #MyCloseCall campaign calls on individuals from both the formal and informal sectors to share stories of near-accidents and what they learnt, in a bid to encourage proactive safety behaviour.
Founder and CEO of AfriSAFE, Femi Da-silva said, “Safety doesn’t start and end at the workplace. It’s pertinent at home, on the road, in the kitchen, and everywhere in between. The #MyCloseCall campaign aims to remind us all of the lessons behind the ‘almosts’ – those moments where things could have gone terribly wrong but didn’t. Those stories can save lives.”
Campaign Modalities
Individuals are encouraged to share their own near-miss incidents, whether at home, work, or in transit using the hashtag #MyCloseCall.
Selected stories will be adapted into short, anonymous animated videos to drive home the learning points, especially on social platforms.
This is envisaged to promote open conversations and encourage the reporting and learning from near-misses to prevent future injuries or fatalities.
The campaign is supported by global and regional safety conscious organisations, including the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), Zambia Sugar, DOSH Kenya, Golden Africa Djibouti, Seplat Energy, Asky Airline, Savenda Group, RusselSmith among others, reflecting AfriSAFE’s unmatched credibility in promoting safety across sectors.
Why It Matters:
Data from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) indicate that workplace injuries result in over 2.3 million deaths annually, while road traffic crashes claim more than 270,000 lives in Africa every year, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO.
“Many of these casualties are preventable,” said Da-Silva. “We want to transform the way people think about safety—not just as a workplace protocol, but as something that affects every moment of our lives.”
The campaign draws inspiration from its predecessors: Safety Got, Safety my language, I am Safety, and Speak out, Shatter your silence (a mental health campaign), that helped to promote a culture of safety and mental wellbeing on the continent annually over the past four years.
Like previous campaigns, #MyCloseCall heralds the 2025 AfriSAFE Congress and Awards scheduled for November 13-14 in Mombasa, Kenya.
