The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Henry Musa Kpaka, led a high-level delegation to the Senehun Modern Bridge today to assess its progress and the ongoing rehabilitation of the 162.5 km road linking key economic hubs in that of Sierra Leone.
The visit is notably part of preparations for the upcoming commissioning of the bridge by President Julius Maada Bio.
During the inspection, Minister Kpaka stressed the importance of the bridge in enhancing transportation for agricultural produce and connecting vital routes, including Yagoy Market to Bo and Moyamba to Freetown.
He stated, “The completion of this bridge will significantly improve our transport systems and facilitate better access for farmers to markets.”
The delegation also engaged with stakeholders regarding the 8,700-hectare Mattru oil palm project, which is anticipated to create over 1,000 jobs for youths and women in the region.
Minister Kpaka assured the community that private sector partners have been secured to boost oil palm production and ensure the successful completion of the road rehabilitation.
Paramount Chief Alhaji AB Sheriff III welcomed the progress made but raised urgent concerns regarding delays in milling operations and the growing impatience among landowners.
He urged for immediate action to address these issues, warning that prolonged delays could lead to youth discontent. In response, Minister Kpaka acknowledged these concerns and proposed a plan for swift action to mitigate the situation.
The team concluded their visit by inspecting the bridge, confirming that only the footpath remains unfinished before the official handover.
Minister Kpaka reiterated the significance of Mattru Jong as a critical area for Sierra Leone’s oil palm expansion, aiming to cut market prices and enhance livelihoods for the local population.
