The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS), in collaboration with national and international partners, on Monday, January 19, 2026, officially launched a four-day training workshop on Portion Size Estimation Methods at the Youyi Building in Freetown.
The training, held at the Ministry’s conference hall, brings together women in agriculture, district nutritionists, and staff from the Ministry of Health, with the objective of strengthening technical capacity in nutrition data collection and analysis.
The workshop is organised by the Food Systems Research Project Sierra Leone (FSRP-SL), in partnership with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), the Sierra Leone Agricultural Research Institute (SLARI), and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, with support from the Ministry of Health and the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Secretariat.

According to organisers, the training is designed to enhance participants’ practical skills in accurately estimating food portion sizes, a critical component in improving the quality and reliability of food consumption data. The programme also provides a platform for nutritionists, researchers, and policymakers to collaborate on strengthening nutrition research and promoting evidence-based decision-making.
The initiative notably forms part of broader efforts by the Government of Sierra Leone and its partners to support evidence-based nutrition programming, inform policy development, and improve public health outcomes, while contributing to the resilience of the country’s food systems.
