State House Director of Communications, Myk Berewa has praised 17-year-old Mariama Koroma, Sierra Leone’s promising judo athlete, for her exceptional talent and determination.

Despite facing defeat against 36-year-old Taiwanese judoka Lien Chen-ling, Koroma’s performance at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games has been noteworthy.

In his statement, Berewa highlighted Koroma’s achievements. He wrote: “Despite facing defeat against the experienced 36-year-old Taiwanese judoka, Lien Chen-ling, Sierra Leone’s 17-year-old judoka, Mariama Koroma, has showcased exceptional talent.

“Making her Olympic debut, she stood out at the 2024 African Championships in Casablanca and the 2023 African Open in Niamey, achieving fifth place. Qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games as one of eleven judo teens, Koroma is the Games’ second youngest athlete, only after 15-year-old Nera Tiebwa from Kiribati.

“Notably, Koroma has made history by becoming the first female Judoka from Sierra Leone to qualify for the Olympic Games. Despite the lack of proper training facilities in her country, her determination and achievements deserve acknowledgment and admiration. Thank you, Mariama.”

Sierra Leone’s historic judo debut at the Paris 2024 Olympics saw Koroma compete in the ’57 kg Women’s Elimination Round of 16. In a match that lasted just 1 minute and 6 seconds, she faced off against the seasoned Chen-ling.

Despite a strong effort, Koroma was unable to overcome the experienced competitor, marking a challenging start for Sierra Leone’s Olympic campaign. The bout, which garnered significant attention due to the age gap between the athletes, ended with Chen-ling emerging victorious.
